Weight loss: how far to go if it works?

Before the summer, there are many candidates for weight loss. With goals often fanciful. However, you have to give yourself a limit. Dangerous weight loss results in fatigue, loss of vitality, mood loss.

If one is interested only in the number of pounds to lose, giving a figure is almost impossible. There is however a simple limit. Under no circumstances should weight loss result in fatigue, loss of vitality, or a decline in mood. The opposite is guaranteed if this weight loss is harmonious. Feel free to ask a notice to your entourage on the perception he may have of your way of being during this experience which, I repeat, is made to significantly improve your general condition.

Finally, apart from the particular personalities in whom this weight loss reveals an important psychiatric problem, it is probable that the slowing down and the stagnation are imposed against the will of the one who loses weight. The challenge is rather the opposite: do not revisit the weight curve fly away in the opposite direction.

With a diet a little diminished, weight loss is important enough that the goal is absolutely more about quantity, but rather how to eat better. It is she who will be important in the long run.

Finally, the danger of excessive weight loss is not only a number, but also the shortcomings that "eating better" must take into account.

Interview of Dr Patrick Serog, nutritionist in Paris

Q: In your great experience, what are the dangers of excessive weight loss?

PS: When the weight loss is too fast, a great fatigue settles. Because of the melting of the muscles, which is too important which makes the movement painful. It also consumes fewer vitamins and minerals, compared to habits before the diet. This sudden decrease creates a lack that contributes to fatigue.

Excessive weight loss can also cause gout attacks, fortunately only in predisposed people. It is very well treated. There has also been a higher frequency of gallbladder stones which can cause a very painful attack called cholecystitis; Here again, medicine is very effective at stopping it. Finally if you have a "hiatal hernia", ie a poorly closed valve between the stomach and esophagus, weight loss by a simple mechanical fact of imbalance of belly fat can aggravate it.

Q: What do you call excessive weight loss?

PS: For a man, maximum 3kilos of monthly loss; 2 kilos for the woman.

It's very easy to lose weight fast; Some surgeons send us, for example, patients to whom they advise a loss of 10, 15 kilos quickly. We know how to do it, without difficulties. On the other hand, one also warns the patient that one will not know how to stabilize it, because a fast and important weight loss is the door wide open to the recovery of the kilos. The body needs a regular rhythm. This is for example one of the very big drawbacks of this hyper-protein diet very fashionable, in which the recovery of weight is almost inevitable. Another consequence, eating behavior disorders, rather in fragile people, who will have disgust of certain foods that can last a very long time, months and months, and are similar to anorexia. They do not settle with the recourse to a psychiatrist.

Q: Why do nutritionists so rarely help themselves to psychiatry?

PS: First of all because it's very difficult to get someone to see a psychiatrist? "I'm not crazy doctor! ". Then it's not correct: I use the services of the psychiatrist but as part of a long process.
